Starting an art business, what does that mean? When I was a young boy, even when I was a teenager, I used to think it meant creating the art that came from within. Then people would fall in love with it and would want to pay “good” money for it. Simple, right? all I have to do is create.
For this week's blog I would like to pay homage to the artist that influenced my art; Walt Disney, Bill Watterson, and Frank Frazetta. These three artists have been at every artistic turning point in my art life and today I would like to thank them for their influences.
Golf is a game of discovery, each round you learn a little more. A little more about yourself, you learn a little more about how to play the game. Each time you go out, even if it's on the same course, you discover something new about that course, or fairway, or green. To play a round of Golf without discovery is a commitment to mediocrity and that is the life lesson drawn form the game of wonderfully strange game.
Telling a story through composition - Hell Hound on my Trail
When I purchased the 5' X 6' canvas for this painting I had no idea what I was going to paint and it took me at least a month before I finally found my inspiration. Eric Clapton's version of the great Robert Johnson's blues song Hell Hound on my Trail was the spark that led to the above image. The first thing that I saw was the composition, and this came directly from the song. I do not know if you have ever heard this version (you can listen to the song with this link) but it starts off with Clapton rippin' this high note that is reminiscent of train whistle announcing it's departure. The riff starts off high and ends low creating this downward spiral feeling. Then the drums drop in....bap..bap..BOOM...bap..bap..BOOM. With the rhythm of the train cars clanging together as the engine chugs slowly out of the station and starts to build momentum. Then just as you think you are about to pick up some speed the bass comes in and the downward spiral begins again.
Warm colors advance and cool colors recede, this is what all young artist are taught. Did you know that you can reverse that? I didn't know this until my second year of art school when a professor of mine explained how this is accomplished.
Out on a School Night - The first step in the Hero's journey is to "answer the call". To put this in simple terms this means the Hero must be willing to go on the adventure. He has to accept the call to go beyond the boundaries of his "normal world" and step into the unknown. The Hero has to journey beyond his known comfort level in order to discover and recognize his own depths.
